Class A Athletes of the Meet Kristen Busch of Freeburg and Zach Riley of Herrin

If the opening of Class A’s opening is any indication of what the rest of the weekend may hold, it’s going to be a great one.  The fireworks started with Carlinville’s Kelsey Card performance in the shot put to Zack Riley’s (Herrin) heroic feats in the long jump/high jump and ended with an exciting Boys 4x400m relay.  In between some great performances were some solid seasonal bests from emerging athletes.

Princeton 10:00.52
Winnebago 10:00.84
Summary: Porta came into the affair as the top seed and they did not disappoint.  The Lady Blue Jays didn’t have the lead at the first exchange- Oregon did (2:24.5).  Porta’s second leg quickly caught up to a fading Oregon runner and it was curtains after that.
Boys-
Beecher 8:09.17 [2:00.3, 2:02.0, 2:05.3, 2:01.1]
St. Joe-Ogden 8:10.31 [2:00.8]
Newman Central Catholic 8:22.67
Summary: it was all Beecher and St. Joe Ogden from the jump. St. Joe-Ogden chased hard at each exchange but couldn’t break into the lead at any point.  It wasn’t until the last leg on the last lap did Beecher appear to seal the deal with Grant Nykaza running 2:01.1 on the anchor.

Jamee Holmes (Tremont) 11:37.82
Miranda Biddle (Mercer County) 11:48.93
Summary: Busch came with in with no time but that didn’t matter for the Class A cross country runner-up.  Busch led a chase pack of three  girls through a sluggish first mile in 5:46.6.  Busch continued to hold the lead as the race entered late in the second half.  The race was all but decided with less than two laps to go when Busch finally wore out her pursuers and coasted to victory over runner-up Holmes.  Originally, Ivy Handley (Decatur St. Teresa) placed third but was disqualified for running off the track.
Boys-
Justin Rehfeldt (Rockford Christian) 9:39.5
Chase Coffey (Farmington) 9:41.1
Steve Schroeder (Monticello) 9:50.0
Summary: Rehfeldt and Coffey were the class of the field according their seed times.  Rehfeldt led a tight pack through the first mile in 4:55 before he and Coffey pulled away from the field.  Coffey tried a jail break move with less than 400m left but it did not in the least faze Rehfeldt.  In fact, Rehfeldt welcomed the challenge until the final bell and on the backstretch is when Rehfeldt push down on the accelerator and speed way on the far turn.  Rehfeldt slowed up mightily on the homestretch with two or three peeks over his shoulder, which appeared to be an obvious attempt at conversing energy for his 1600m final later.

Courtney McKibbon (Rockford Christian) 8.60
Alexa Allen (Riverdale) 8.60

Dontae Pryor (Kewanee) 6.63
Jade Ackerman (Champaign St. Thomas More) 6.66
Nate Schreiber (Wesclin) 6.68
Summary: Pryor had top mark in prelim with 6.67 and bettered it by pulling away late for the victory.

Mitch Heiar (Sherrard) 2:02.15
Brian Barney (South Holland Seton Academy) 2:02.50
Summary: Barney led all the way up until the 60m when he tied up badly and faded to third place.  Gibbs bid his time throughout each lap and moved past Barney for the winner.

Girls 4x200m relay-
Sherrard 1:48.81
Eureka 1:49.11
Byron 1:50.09
Summary: Eureka threw down a serious challenge when they heat 3 of 4.  But Sherrard used the talent of Sarah Boraas to win the championship flight going way.
Boys 4x200m relay-
Herrin 1:34.48
Winnebago 1:34.48
St. Thomas More 1:34.54
Summary: Herrin was in a bit of trouble when field event extraordinaire Zack Riley got the baton on the anchor.  He had to weave a bit through traffic but stayed patient until the final turn on to the homestretch on the inside lane he sped and leaned at the finish line and just got the victory.

400m-
Girls
Lacey Hainline (Sherrard) 59.65
Krista McClure (Havana) 1:00.19
Taylor Farley (Seton Academy) 1:01.05

Brian Diaz (Rock Falls) 51.89

1600m-
Girls
Kristen Busch (Freeburg) 5:25.08
Stephanie Simpson (Chicago Luther North) 5:25.39
Sydni Meunier  (Gibson City)
Summary: Busch seized control of the race near the middle of the 4th lap and Simpson went with her.  Simpson dogged Busch before trying to use her long strides to take the lead with less than 400m remaining to no avail.  The dimunitive Busch went around on the backstretch of the bell lap and remained in control through the winning tape.
Boys
Justin Rehfeldt (Rockford Christian) 4:30.32 [3:25.0- 1200m]
Alessandro Mazza (Walther Lutheran) 4:32.05
Grant Nykaza (Beecher) 4:35.23
Summary: Rehfeldt held back purposely in his 3200m thriller so he could have some thing left for this one.  The early pace was slow time with Rehfeldt staying behind the leaders, who set the pace in 71.1 and 2:22.  Finally, at the 1200m did he finally take charge.  With 400m to go it was pretty much academic and another easy victory.

200m-
Girls
Sarah Boraas (Sherrard) 26.32
Lacey Hainline (Sherrard) 26.45
Shakyra Moss (Manual) 26.85
Summary: no surprise here with the state’s top duo taking charge right away.  Boraas pulled away from her equally talented mate Hainline near the finish line.
Boys
Steven Davis (Reed-Custer) 22.48
Marshall Anderson (Herrin) 23.04
Jade Ackerman (Champaign St. Thomas More) 23.11

Rachel Ballard (St. Joe-Ogden) 16-9.5
Amy Martin (Oakwood) 16-4.75
Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton) 15-11.75
Summary: Ballard, the class state leader, produces a class best in the final and easily defeats a tightly bunched field.  Sarah Kapp (Newman Central) who was supposed to challenge Ballard, finished 8th.

-Pole Vault-
Girls-
Sarah Bell (Bloomington Central Catholic) 11-0
Taeler Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman) 10-6
Paige Knodle (Byron) 10-6
Summary: Bell, only a freshman, won in a new meet record.
Boys-
Matt Bane (Rochester) 16-6 MR
Cody Klein (Sparta) 16-0
Summary: the most exciting boys event by far. The duo match each other intensity from 15-0, 15-6, 16-0, and finally Bane cleared 16-6.  Klein missed on his three attempts but it was the best battle that Class A has seen in the PV.

Shot Put-
Girls-
Kelsey Card (Carlinville) 47-2 (ties all-time best) [series: 46-7.25, 47-2, 46-3, 44-3.5, 38-1, 46.2.25]
Summary: the cards were in Card’s favor as she tied the all-time record that all-time great Dani Bunch established several years ago.  Card appeared to press in the final.  She admitted to “loosing rhythm” on her final three attempts.  One of her throws slipped out of her hand for a paltry 38-1 effort.  Nevertheless, her series was good enough to win any class league title on any day.
Boys-
Sam Kachanuck (Havana) 53-3
Brandon Noe (St. Thomas More) 53-2
Summary: Kachanuck was not among the leaderboard or meet favorites but it didn’t matter.  He edged the more heralded Noe in one of his best heaves in the final stages of the competition.  Class Leader Jason Baker of Reed-Custer finished a distant 4th.

Triple Jump-
Girls-
MacKenzie Bollinger (Aurora Christian) 35-6
Amy Martin (Oakwood) 34-5.75
Summary: Bollinger didn’t match her class best but she was still able to win easily.
Boys-
Dylan Dejonge (Erie) 43-11.75

High Jump-
Girls-
Kelsey Holman (Eureka) 5-6
Maura Cummins (Newton) 5-4
Stacey Sinclair (Porta) 5-4
Summary: Holman closed out her indoor campaign with a solid victory.
Boys-
Zack Riley (Herrin) 6-7
Preston Nance (Sparta) 6-5
Jordan Payton (Rockford Christian Life) 6-5
Summary: Riley didn’t enter the competition until the height reached 6-5.  He cleared it easily and took out 6-7 in the same fashion.  He had trouble with 6-10.  He didn’t have his legs and bowed out of the competition rather quickly.  It was a bit of disappointment for the fans but the super talented Riley provided enough thrillers in four events on the evening.
