Q & A with Kyle Gibson

Naperville, IL

Michael Newman

Senior Kyle Gibson of North High School in Naperville, Illinois is coming off

a somewhat successful season. Fighting illness, Kyle finished 24th in the

AAA State Meet last November. In May, he finished 4th in the 3200.

Before he starts the upcoming season, Kyle took some time out of his schedule to answer some questions...

Dyestat Illinois:How has your training gone so far this summer?

Gibson:
It's going really good.I've learned a lot from the past two summersso this time

around I know exactly what I can handle.

Dyestat Illinois:Describe you’re your experience from the state cross country meet last fall.

Your coach (David Racey) said if it weren't the state meet, he would not

have run you.

Gibson:
I came down with bronchitis the Monday before state. I got a lot of medicine

to control the bronchitis, which probably wasn't a good idea because I got

really bad migranes Friday and Saturday. I think that came from taking all

this medicine at once. The morning of state I had a really bad migrane and I

had about one meal in my stomach from the last two days. Before the race,

I was throwing up and not feeling good and Coach Racey really want me to

run. I was planning on just gutting it out and runnning with the leaders

anyways, but when the race started I realized that wasn't going to happen.

I just did what I could.

Dyestat Illinois:Has last year's state meet driven you and your teammates this year?

Gibson:
Yeah, we had such high expectations of ourselves so that was a tough way

to end. I don't think we'll be satisfied with anything less than a state

championship this year.

Dyestat Illinois:Have you set any goals for the upcoming season?

Gibson:
My individual goal is to win the state meet. As for anything after that, we'll

see what happens.

Dyestat Illinois:Do you have any pre-race ritual or eat something special?

Gibson:
I normally have a snack an hour before a race, but nothing special.

Dyestat Illinois:What is the one workout you like the most?

Gibson:
We normally do a long tempo on the trails on the Saturdays we don't have a

meet. I really like those and feel like they prepare us well. The distance is

somewhere between 10-11k.

Dyestat Illinois:What is the one workout you like the least?

Gibson:
We don't do any crazy hard workouts really. I think the hardest one we've done

was early this past track season where we sprinted up a hill and jogged down for

about 10 minutes, then did a tempo to another hill about a mile and a half away,

sprinted up for 10 minutes then did a tempo to another hill for another 10 minutes

of hills.

Dyestat Illinois:What is the one area of running you think you can improve?

Gibson:
One thing I think I can focus on is getting my race strategy down early in the

season. As far as training goes, everything can improve.

Dyestat Illinois:If there was one racce in your running career you could re-run, which

one would it be?

Gibson:
State last year.

Dyestat Illinois:What is the one thing that your coach stresses with you when you are running?
Gibson:
He always wanted us to challenge ourselves and always be in the race. He hates it

when runners sit and kick.

Dyestat Illinois:Your team will be highly rated this fall…one of the favorites to win the state meet.

Which one of your feloow teammates will surprise the fans?

Gibson:
I think a lot of people will be surprises. Bob Guthrie is having a really good

summer and is coming off a good track season where he ran 9:39 all by himself.

I think he had a few more seconds in him. David McWilliams is also a really good

runner having a great summer that not many people know too much because he

plays baseball in the spring(he's an old man though so his hip needs to hold up).

I'll leave it at that before I go on about our whole team.

Dyestat Illinois:Have you thought about college? Which schools are interested in you?
Gibson:
Some of my early favorites that I've got interest from are Oklahoma State and

Portland. I've talked a lot to Iona but their coach just left for Wisconsin so we'll

see what happens there. Being a good team is really important to me.

Dyestat Illinois:Have you thought about what you will study in college?

Gibson:
I'm thinking about Education or Social Work , but I'm pretty open right now.

Dyestat Illinois:What do you like to do in your spare time?

Gibson:
I watch way too much TV. I also love to play basketball, frisbee, and my friends

and I have been golfing a little this summer.

Thanks Kyle ! Good luck to you and your teammates this season !!!
