Girls 3A Top 25 summary (regional recap)

Week ending 10/24/09

1.  Mt. Prospect (Prospect)-
the state’s #1 team stopped any thoughts of an upset that conference foes #3 Schaumburg and #5 Hoffman Estates might have had by placing all five runners in the top 10 at the Hoffman Estates Regional.  Brooke Wolfe (at left in blue) led her team with a runner-up finish in 18:23.  Fellow freshman Lauren Poplawski battled through rugged course conditions to snag 7th place.  Kasey Krum, Savannah Snead, and Lauren Miabuecher checked in with 8th, 9th, and 10th finishes to complete the team scoring for 36 points.  Mary Styzek added to her opponent’s total with a 12th place effort and usual #2 runner Annette White’s replacement Jeanette Wochinski closed out the team’s finish at 14th overall.  White did not compete due to a sore shin.  She should be set for the next round; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

2. Palatine-
a week after suffering their first loss of the season, the Pirates went out and methodically disposed of their competition by scoring 27 pts to runner-up Arlington Heights (Hersey) who copped 83.  The 1,3,5 finishes from veterans Sarah McIntosh, Courtney Brown, and Ruth Allen was really all it took for the victory.  No other team had more than two finishers in the top 10.  Freshman Tess Wasowicz added a seventh place finish and Emily Schulte closed things out in 11th place; next is Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

3. Schaumburg-
the Saxon’s usual trio of Britten Petrey, Karen Lesiewicz, and Colette Falsey (running as a trio in left photo) ran well with 1st, 3rd, and 6th places respectively at the Hoffman Estates Regional.  The remaining two scorers Jordan Wagner and especially Lizzie Tapia were very far back from the scoring end.  Nora Ferguson, the #4 runner, was out.  She will be needed if Schaumburg is expected to win or challenge for the first two spots at sectionals; next is Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

4. Elmhurst (York)- the Lady Dukes made quick work of competition at the Lake Park Regional scoring 21 pts by placing all seven runners in the top 10.  In fact, they put on a display rarely seen as the tally went 1,2,5,6,7,8,9.  The 1-7 split was a sick 1:05 against ranked and solid Lake Park!  Meghan Frigo won going away in 18:21.  Teammate Megan Fry was second in 18:21; next is Skokie Niles West Sectional on 10/31.

5. Hoffman Estates-
the host Hawks finished third with 73 pts.  Haley Goers placed 5th to pace her team.  Top runners Melissa Schmidt, Hannah Worman, and Gisela Duenas were held out of competition; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

6. Orland Park (Sandburg)-
the Eagles continue to roll along after winning the Chicago (Marist) Regional with 22 pts.  Kim Christensen and Lexie Goldsmith finished first and third respectively.  Sandburg added 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th places for their remaining teammates; next is the Lockport Sectional on 10/31.

7. Naperville North- finished second to Wheaton-Warrenville once more 43-36 at the Naperville North Regional.  Despite runner better than at conference, the Huskies 1-5 split was an uncharacteristic 1:11.  It also appeared to be several holdouts as coach Dan Iverson ran a few newcomers.  Freshman Emily Smith led the team in 4th with a time of 18:21; next is St. Charles East Sectional on 10/31.

8. Barrington- Coach Deb Revolta’s team was hit hard by the flu bug this past week which resulted in several sub-par performances by her top runners.  For instance, one of the state’s top runners freshman Rebecca Batliner placed 9th at the Palatine Regional.  The Fillies should rebound from their 4th place finish in the next round; next is the Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

9. Wheaton-Warrenville South- won the Naperville North Regional 36-43.  The Tigers once again beat the host Huskies upfront with the trio of McKenna Kiple, Lauren Mordini, and Claire Kelly.  They finished with 2nd, 3rd, and 6th places; next is St. Charles East Sectional on 10/31.

10. Geneva-
the two-time defending state champion is quietly and methodically going about their busy after recording a perfect score (15) at the West Aurora Regional.  Kelly Whitley won in 18:54 and her scoring teammates Tess Ehrhardt, Kelly Shogren, Rachel Hammond, and Megan Brady stormed home within 11 seconds of one another; next is the St. Charles East Sectional on 10/31.

11. LaGrange (Lyons Twp)-
even without several of their top runners in the line up, the host Lions won going away scoring 37 pts to turn back upstart Downers Grove North.  Lisa Gordon won her first post-season race and two more teammates in Juliet Lusson and Eliza Dudley checked into the top 10.  The team’s top runner Kelsey Kilrea did not compete; next is the Lockport Sectional on 10/31.

12. Downers Grove North
- the Trojans are enjoying one of their seasons in a long time after placing second in the Lyons Regional.  The steady trio of Samantha Fry, Gabriella Effrein, and Gabrielle Hesslau virtually matched Lyons’ top three.  DGN will need to close a little better at #5 in the next round if there is any chance of upsetting Sandburg or Lyons; next is the Lockport Sectional on 10/31.

13. Hinsdale Central-
the Red Devils placed third at the Lyons Regional ending their consecutive run of regional titles.  Despite losing a ton of scorers from last year, this was supposed to be a reloading year because of the number of experienced runners back.  However, it appears it has become more of a rebounding situation.  Although Jill Hardies ran well finishing in second place, the team 1-5 split was well over one minute; next is the Lockport Sectional on 10/31.

14. Naperville Central-
endured a tough time at the Naperville North Regional but placed 4th and advanced to the next round of competition.  Amanda Fox won her first regional title on a very muddy course in 18:08; next is the St. Charles East Sectional on 10/31.

15. Chicago Whitney Young-
the host Dolphins scored 18 pts on 1,2,3,5,7 finishes.  Lavinia Jurkiewicz was the winner in 18:18- 50 seconds ahead of teammate Devyn Thompson; next is the Skokie Niles West Sectional on 10/31.

16. Lisle (Benet Academy)-
the Redwings did not have a particularly good outing from their top runner McKinzie Schulz but they still easily copped the third spot at the Naperville North Regional with 87 pts and finish ahead of Naperville Central, who had 101 pts.  Katie Porada led her team in 8th place.  An ailing Schulz grabbed 11th; next is St. Charles Regional on 10/31.

17. Libertyville-
the Wildcats completely dominated their regional with 23 pts to Lake Zurich’s 70.  Megan Janezic and Erin Jaffke went 1-2 in the three-mile affair.  Three other Wildcat runners in Sarah Farish, Nicole Jaffke, and Michelle McCracken placed among the top with 4th, 6th, and 10th places; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

18. St. Charles East-
not even a flu-ridden school could stop the Saints from winning the St. Charles East Regional.  East beat cross-town rival North by 20 pts 36-56 despite the North Stars taking the first two finishes.  The Saints flooded the top ten with four scoring strikes.  Mallory Abel led her team in 3rd place; next is St. Charles East Sectional on 10/31.

19. Rolling Meadows- the Mustangs enjoyed perhaps their race of the season placing 4th at the Hoffman Estates Regional with 75 points- just two points in back of host Hoffman Estates.  Christina Gastfield paced her team in 4th place; next is Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.

20. Downers Grove South-

the Mustangs running without top runner Grace Magliola ran for the most part in a pack at the Lyons Regional.  Sophomore Jacquelyn Thate placed 16th to lead her team while senior Cara Drennan 26th in 20:40.  The 1-5 split was a scant 41 seconds; next is the Lockport Sectional on 10/31.

24. Arlington Heights (Hersey)-
the surging Huskies placed  second at the Palatine Regional and in the process defeated three ranked teams.  Top runners Salena Clohisy and Sarah Reynolds finished 4th and 6th overall; next is the Schaumburg Sectional on 10/31.
